Europe is the second-smallest continent, covering 10.18 million km2 (3.93 million sq mi), approximately 2% of the Earth’s surface (6.8% of land area) (using the seven-continent model). Politically, Europe is split into around fifty sovereign states, the biggest and most populous of which is Russia, which occupies 39% of the continent and accounts for 15% of its people.
